If you are not ready for a full-sized boat, you might enjoy building a model instead. These model kits can be assembled with wood glue, sandpaper, and a bit of patience. They are cut by hand from 1/16" basswood model-building plywood. Masts and spars are from dowel. Finished sizes are 18" (Teal) or 23" (Light Schooner) long. With waterproof glue and house paint, these model boats will float. Kits include: pre-cut wood pieces for hull and appendages (leeboard or daggerboard and rudder), spars (mast, boom(s), yard(s)), sail(s), waterproof wood glue, and sandpaper. Paint is not included.
